The Giver Essay

What is the real ending to The Giver? Did Jonas find a new community? Did he die of hypothermia or exhaustion? What really happened? There is no real ending because the author left it as a complete cliff hanger. Sometimes I love a good cliff hanger, but not in this case because toward the end of the book it feels like the author was just sick of writing the book so she gave up.
The end of The Giver is quite lifeless, boring, and not explanatory at all. For example, in the last 20 pages of the book, I was thinking that there would be at least one hundred pages left. There is still so much to explain, like if they are alive or dead, where they are, and why there is music. I think that Jonas and Gabriel ended up coming to another community. That community was probably celebrating Christmas because they were singing, and Jonas saw lights, but it never says that, so how do you really know?
In conclusion, I think that Lois Lowry didn’t try very hard toward the end of the legendary book, The Giver. All Jonas does is walk, go through some hardships, find a community, and then the book ends. I believe that even I could have written a better ending than Louis Lowry did when she wrote The Giver.
